Processor Compatability Issue Socket 775

Greetings All,

This is the closest section I can find to post this question.

I have a Dell Optiplex 280 desktop computer/tower. It takes a socket 775 3.0ghz or 3.2ghz processor which it currently does not have.

Looking around I see many socket 775 processors with different numbers attached to them, the one I *THINK* that was once in my desktop was a 3.0 or 3.2 socket 775 SL727. What 3.0/3.2 processor will work in this board?

The mother-board number is:
CN-0G5611-69861-49H-0E75-C/0-CN.

Thanks for any assistance!

Looks like a p4 570 3.85 ghz is the most you can upgrade to. What is the current cpu in there? How much memory is installed? In all honesty, its really not worth it to upgrade such an old machine.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY!

OK - BUT DON'T NEED ANYTHING THAT FAST. I AM TRYING TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER THAT I HAVE FOR A BOY SCOUT UNIT IN NORTH FLORIDA.

What is the current cpu in there?
THERE IS NONE AS I BELIEVE MY INITIAL POST INDICATED. I BELIEVE I TOOK OUT A SOCKET 775/3.0/3.2 SL727 HOWEVER, I COULD BE WRONG (I AM SURE ABOUT SOCKET!).

How much memory is installed?
4 STICKS - I SIMPLY DON'T REMEMBER - 4GB'S I PRESUME. I AM SIMPLY TRYING TO GET IT BACK ON IT'S FEET AGAIN.

In all honesty, its really not worth it to upgrade such an old machine.
NOT LOOKING TO UPGRADE - JUST TO PUT SOMETHING TOGETHER IN PREVIOUSLY STATED REASON.

...What do the numbers "SL727 mean and if i had to shop ebay for a processor, what would i look for since there are a lot of "numbers" as i stated floating around?

SL727 is just the set of specs for a processor.

"Socket T"....huh?...What happened to Socket 775?

Socket T is socket 775. I just copied that list of processors from dell's website.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

LGA 775, also known as Socket T, is an Intel desktop CPU socket. LGA stands for land grid array. Unlike earlier common CPU sockets, such as its predecessor Socket 478, the LGA 775 has no socket holes; instead, it has 775 protruding pins which touch contact points on the underside of the processor (CPU).

Nothing to be done in the bios at all. Install cpu along with a heatsink and fan and should be good to go.
