I recently changed motherboard-processor from a single core amd to a dual core processor-and tried using the same hard drive that was in the system. I had to re-activate windows-but it works now ---except that the system is only using one core---someone told me I had to update the Hardware Abstraction -but not exactly sure how to do this-thanks everyone.

when you change hardware you need to completely reinstall windows otherwise your hardware will not work properly. this isn't an issue with windows 7 because it installs/uninstalls drivers when you use new hardware.

You will need to reinstall windows for sure.

I've never had to reinstall the OS just upgrading the processor or hardware, unless its the mother board and has different chipsets/Lan/Sound (driver issues). But that can be over come if you do a few thing before you swap boards. And Windows 7 is no better at it then hell even windows 98 was.

Does it show 2 processors in device manager and under Task Manager? Plus did you uninstall all the old drivers and install all the new ones?

^ that. The only reason you should have to reinstall windows is if you've swapped the mobo. However, if it was a big enough change to trigger a re-activation, there's no telling what's happened. Can't hurt to try, as long as you back everything up.

What operating system are you running first of all?

And no I've never had to reinstall the OS just from a CPU change. And only once with a mobo change because I went from AMD to intel and it didn't work at all. I even swapped motherboard intel/intel before. My socket 775 to 1156 transition was smooth, using windows 7. I've since reinstalled because I picked up more SSD's for raid, but just saying.

I've had something similar to this...I ended up just having to reformat. See below.
