Processor Help (no overclocking)

Hey guys, I'm looking at building my own system and found this site to be a great help so far, but I have a dilemma regarding processor selection. I've been looking at AMD P2 X4 940, AMD P2 X4 955 Black Ed., and the Intel i7, and I can't decide which to go with. I'll be using the pc for occasional gaming, office work, music/movie playing, and internet. I want to keep the total cost ~$750. I've got a monitor, case, keyboard/mouse, and a PSU (500W I believe) which I may or may not replace depending on budget and power requirements for the new system. This will be my first build and as of now, I do not plan on overclocking it as I don't know how comfortable I will be messing with those settings. I know the i7 is the new thing, the 940 is overall a cheaper system (option of ddr2), and the 955 compares well to the i7 in gaming but lacks in other areas. Will I be able to get an i7 system for that cheap? Is the i7 just overkill for me and would the 940 be better? Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

All three are overkill for you Im thinking. Lol.

A Q6600 would do you perfectly (and then some) and is cheaper.

+1. What kind of games are you going to be playing?
For regular office work, you may be able to just get by on an E8400 or something of the sort, with 4GB RAM, and a nice video card
I mean if you are going to play Crysis, Far Cry 2, and Fallout 3, stuff of the sort,
then go with a Q6600.

Look at my specs. Got a dual core with 4GB ram, and an 8800gts 320meg (lol) and I can play crysis at high settings.
So, I do believe the i7 and Phenom's would be somewhat overkill.

Serious overkill. Take a look at the Intel Core 2 Duo 3 ghz. That will be overkill as well but more affordable overkill.
