option one.

graphics card is most important in a gaming system. well more important then a cpu anyway.

for sure.

put it this way.

my friend has a 6000.

when playing crysis on my 8800GT, i notice no difference in frames (using fraps), when playing with my 3.4 ghz old cpu and his 6000.

so yeah. its definately fine.

what would the minimum graphics card you would go for? and how important is sli. Is it worth choosing one with sli even if I can only afford to get one card at present.
Whats a decent card above the 8500?

A decent card above the 8500?

If I was looking for one, I'd probably go for the 8600GT 512mb. Very decent card, just seen it in action at a mates running CoD4 at the highest frame rate I've ever seen!

A decent card is either the ATi Radeon HD3850 or the nVidia 8800GT. The 8800GT is faster but the ATi is cheaper, it depends what you want really. The 8600GT is OK but it's dominated by the HD3850.

I thought the ATI 3850 compared more with the 9600GT... anyway, those would probably be the minimum I'd go for... or maybe a 8800GS, but I don't know much about the last one.

EVGA has their 8800GS out for $155 on Newegg, great deal IMO especially since the XFX of equal price has 200mhz slower memory and according to reviews a very loud fan. The 8800GS actually beats the 9600GT at low resolutions like 1024x768 and 1280x1024 but once you get into bigger resolutions the 9600GT puts down the 8800.
