Processor or Video card?

When doing a burnout on Underground 2 DEMO, my computer suddenly gets very slow... around 1 FPS... and whent he smoke clears it runs fine again... is this my processor or video card?

My computer:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz overclocked to 3.05Ghz
PC2100 256MB + PC2700 256MB = 512MB RAM
Geforce4 MX440 AGP 64MB Video Card
Seagate 120GB HDD
XP PRO SP2

PC Wizard score: 2200

what is causing my computer to slow down?

Dude i think its a bit of both and your ram :) Your Computer looks like it needs a bit of upgrading..

Underground 2 is GPU-intensive game. 512MB ram is more than enough for Underground 2, and his CPU is not bad for this game.

In my older computer I have P4 2.4GHz, 256MB ram and 128MB geforce fx5200, and play it on 640x480 medium setting with no problem.

Are you sure it's 1FPS? Download FRAPS and make sure, because I doubt it gets that low.

And do you have the settings on medium or high settings? With your system you should have the settings on lowest possible, and probably a resolution no higher then 1024x768.

Speaking of your computer, you have a very low end video card, and a fairly old processor and not a heck of alot of RAM.

well maybe 2-3FPS... im running in middle detail, in 800x600... i can run it in 1024x768... but it slows down and ghosts alittle... and i have jump camera on and almost everything on in the options below the detail thingy... it works great! but it just slows down when doing a burnout... ill try putting everything on the lowest detail and see what happens... oh yeah ni got the video card for $20... ebay... and i downloaded the drives from nvidia... im a type of guy who gets parts really cheap. i need better RAM and video card for sure.. and a sound card (when i ordered the mobo combo from partspc they didnt include drives)... can my computer run pc3200?

Dont forget the RAM! im gonna get it after summer... and ive been an idiot... i didnt know wether my mobo could support DDR400... and it says right next to my RAM slot... >( doh!

It's definately your video card causing the problem. The reason it happens when you do a burnout is because the smoke effect is a transparent picture(I think..), and the more you burnout out the more of these pictures build up on the screen, causing your video card to bog down. This tends not to hinder performance on newer cards, but older cards don't take to it to kindly. The same thing happens on Halo for Xbox when you kill a grunt or something and smack it with your rifle for about 5 minutes. Eventually the blood picture was layered so many times it lagged harshly whenever I walked near the grunt:D

diffinitly your video card.

and 512mb ram is not that high... ram keeps performace steady and reduce the sudden chunk of laggness and video card boost up frame rates.... but in your shoes its diffinitly video card and second ram. your cpu is acceptable.

yeah i dont think it would be the processor....i say the Gfx card is the culprit :)

I already said in my previous post that need for speed doesn't take a lot of ram. My older computer have 256MB ram and it runs underground 2 without any lag.

Just to reiterate what I said earlier, NFSU(2) relies heavily on the video card. You can have a nice system with 2GB of RAM, but only an FX5200 and it will lag at times.

Ya you are absolutely right.Because i too played this game in my older comp with 256MB RAM and 2.00GHZ processor with onboard graphics. And i even played this game in 800x600 resoltion without any problem.
