Processor Speed Question

Are all processor speeds in GHz values universal in comparison? For example, is a Celeron D with 3GHz equivalent to a Pentium 4 with 3GHz? Or does the number of GHz depend on the type of CPU, where a 3GHz Pentium D would require a much higher GHz value from a Celeron D in order to be the same speed?

If the latter is the case, which is faster between a Pentium 4 3.6GHz and Pentium D 3GHz?

Thank you.

performance depends on model, frequency, and cache size, and more recently amount of cores.

for instance, a pentium 4 at 4ghz would get easily crushed in pretty much any benchmark by a core 2 quad at 3ghz.

pentium 4 and core 2 being the models, the more frequency and cache size the better. 1 core (with HT presumably) and 4 cores being the amount of cores.

generally your best bet is to come here to the computer forum and asked use which processor is better, comparing two or more processors. but, if you prefer to do the research yourself, www.tomshardware.com has a good set of cpu charts.

Fade2green514 covered most of it. Another thing that is a main difference between brands like Intel and AMD is efficiency. A good example of that is a core 2 quad at 2.4ghz from Intel (4 cores) can outperform a Phenom x4 2.5ghz (4 cores as well) from AMD. Another example of which chip is more efficient is if you look at the wattage increase between the different models in each series you will see the intel core 2 quads actually don't use much more power when you go up, but the AMDs use a lot more.

I hope I didn't confuse you too much.

Awesome site, Fade2green514.

I understand now. I've only been acquainted with the old school processors that are obsolete now, and I've been trying to keep up with the new ones. I used to just compare the GHz, but I'll keep the efficiency factor in consideration now.

Thank you both for the clarification.
