My current computer was built back in 03.It sports a amd athlon xp1800 1.54gz
processor and a Gigabite ga7va motherboard.I just upgraded the ram to a total of 3gb.I just installed a new 500 GB HD to back up the old 50gb hard drive.

My question is I am ready to upgrade to a faster Processor. Can someone point me to a AMD xp processor that will work with this mother board?.I need something compatable.AMD has always been a pretty good processor for me.

I like newegg prices and turnaround time..but they dont seem to carry any XP processors.

For clarification,,this will not be a gaming computer.I used it mostly for downloading music and videos.

Have fun at EBay trying to locate an older Socket A type cpu there. You might find a few Socket 754s at this late date since 939, AM2, and the new AMD quad cores are seen by most vendors now. That model sees a 333mhz max fsb there with a DDR 333 PC2700 memory standard.

The spefications are seen at http://www.gigabyte.co.nz/Products/...therboard&ProductID=1609&ProductName=GA-7VA-C

The Atholon XP3000+ with the 333 fsb would be the fastest model if found. The XP3200+ would be seen as a Barton cored XP2500 at the 166mhz setting in the bios.

Geez. That combo isn't worth putting any money into it. Scrap the entire computer and pick up a refurbished deal. You can pick up AMD X2 based computers with 200GB drives and 1GB of memory for under $300, in some cases as low as $200, complete with OS. I sell off-lease enterprise class desktops with P4 2.8s or greater for under $300 (with licensed XP Pro). Don't throw good money after bad. The XP processors were terrible processors.

The older Atholon XP models along with the Semprons were often the "gamer's choice" over the old P3s and P4s which saw clock speed while AMD saw more work done at the lower cpu speeds there. Intel finally took the lead with the Core 2 Duos and the like in the gaming world.

The main problem there is simply being outdated and no new supplies of old model cpus being stocked since vendors already cleared all of those out for the newer Socket types. If you deal with a vendor like newegg you won't even see Socket 754 models being carried at this point. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...N=2010340343+50001028+1389627502&name=Desktop

Yeah,,thats what I am finding out.

Im looking over at pricewatch. They show many there but I just dont know which one I could order and really get some faster speeds out of it.

You have to remember that the board maxes at the 333mhz fsb there. The fastest stock speed will be choosing a model listing 333mhz and seeing about 1.8ghz to 2ghz depending on the model selected. I found one XP2800+ seeing $108 for a price tag at http://www.shopzilla.com/12--AMD_Athlon_XP_2800_2.08_GHz_CPU_-_cat_id--403__prod_id--7379900

You should see the price they want for the XP3000+ 333mhz fsb model. http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp...product_id=83-9656&CMP=datafeeds&ATT=shopping

For that much you could almost cover the cost of an eMachines "boat anchor" seen at http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...&Sku=E400-T3025&SRCCODE=NEXTAG&CMP=EMC-NEXTAG :P

Thanks for looking.I guess I will just keep this one up and running and build another one as time goes along.

I was running across enough XP2200s with the 266 mhz speed on those but simply not worth the time. For what you would pay out at those links you could yourself a nice new build sitting on your desk!

I found a couple of 2200's on ebay for $40

But they do not come with the heat sync.I was reading where once removed you cannot use the heatsink any longer.

What would I do for a heatsink?

Here is one of the listings

Once removing the stock hsf you have to replace the thermal pad adhered to the heat sink itself. They do have pad replacement kits but most would opt for grabbing something like a Zalman 7000b for an older Socket A board.

The model board there sees the 333mhz top stock speed for the fsb where the XP3000+ was the fastest model. The 2800+ is the next one down unless finding an old Semprom model.

But the system there is good at this time mainly for an older OS like 98 or a Linux box. If you were passing it along to a kid for a first pc for student use it would work the way it is and simply gain a little with the faster model cpu.

For a primary system upgrading for a good price into something newer in a large increment would be the better move. Several old builds here were simply given away for first pcs in order to see them put to use. Some old Dells are being revived as well without online capability at the parents request. Those came with 98 anyways. But they were still "Boat Anchors"! :P
