Program to help me work remotely

I have a computer software question. I am relocating pretty far from my parents and they tend to rely on me for computer help (downloading pictures, creating folders, and shopping online). Both can't seem to or want to learn how to do it themselves. I have an Apple computer with the Snow Leopard operating system. My mother has the same and my father has a PC with Windows XP (Actually, he might have a later version, but I have to check).

At work, if I need something done on my computer, I call the help desk and they log onto my computer from theirs and fix it. Can I get a program to do the same on my parents computers? What are the different types out there? What do they cost? Are there any that are free? I help them each once or twice a month.

I would REALLY appreciate any help on this topic. Thank you to whoever responds!

+1 for teamviewer. I have even used it to remote a family laptop from an Ipad when I was in another state. Not ideal obviously, however it did save me trying to talk them through it.

Logmein does have a free option for up to 5 machines. However unless you install the local client prior it is difficult to talk anyone through installing the client with the free version.

Thank you so much for the advice! I researched both and compared. I think I will be going with TeamViewer. I really appreciate the suggestions and for taking the time to respond!

Yeah if that doesn't work with you then you could use hamachi for the Virtual LAN and VNC to remote desktop in.

TeamViewer works really well for what you want and has both Windows and Mac versions.

TeamViewer can be complicated to pick up to begin with. I'd try LogMeIn...its easy to use, you need no software except for on the remote pc you want to access, its all in your browser and there is an app for it on the app store too which is pretty sweet.

Sorry I didn't read this. It might be worth if doing this using GTALK. It can be used in the browser, as an extension for chrome in the chromestore, or downloaded, and its really lightweight and easy to use.
