Programs crashing after RAM upgrade

i have an older HP pavillion desktop which had 2 x 256 ram, the computer worked fine with this setup but was a bit slow,

i purchased new ram and installed it 2 x 512 (removed the old ram)

i have tried many programs mainly internet explorer and firefox, they will crash and close within 1-2 mins of loading them and using them,

i even removed firefox from the system completely and reloaded it, the same thing happens,

i have tested the ram with memtest.org and it tests out good, any ideas?

Ensure you have the latest motherboard bios, chipset drivers, windows updates and that the memory settings in the bios (e.g. voltage etc) is correct.

thanks,

i updated the bios,

i downloaded the chipset update but not sure what to do with it?.....the device manager pops up with a list of my hardware, which item do i select to upgrade? im not sure

what should the voltage be set to in the bios?

Since it's an HP you won't be able to change the voltages.

As for the chipset update, just run the installer for it.

If you still have issues, run Memtest86+, as the RAM may be faulty.

the installer program tells me to select the item in the device manager and install it myself, i have already ran memtest, the ram is good
