Programs Keep Freezing Up

I've had hell with my mom's Toshiba laptop over the past few days.

It was running really crappy and it froze during Vista updates. I kept getting errors when I tried to restore it so I just loaded Windows 7.

Everything works, but it is unstable. Mozilla freezes every few minutes and any program I run from AVG to Microsoft Word freezes after a couple of minutes.

Any clue as to what is causing this? My best guess is the hard drive but I'm not sure.

Did you do an upgrade or fresh install of windows 7? Download the hard drive makers disk diagnostic utility and run it on the drive.

I did a fresh install. When I was selecting the partition to install it on, it said to install on a different drive (only have 1) because the disk might fail soon. I installed it anyway and it is working, but with the problems mentioned above

Wouldn't you question the fact that you already got a message saying the drive might fail soon and not install windows until you got a new hard drive? It's telling you that for a reason. Most likely you have a failing hard drive but you can run the diagnostic test I told you about in my last post.

Yes, but at that point Windows Vista would no longer even boot so I had no way of being able to test anything. At least now I can do some kind of diagnostics on it. I can always reload 7 if I need a new hard drive

There's no need to run any diagnostics. It's telling you, and it's acting like, the hard drive is bad.

Plan to replace it. :good:

Well before you buy the new HDD,try first to completely format that HDD with the DOS tool called KILL DISK 4.1 and then after that make a fresh Windows 7 install and see how it works...
