programs won't start

Hi all, my computer had been running slow for a while now and Itunes in particular decided it didn't want to start, after multiple attempts I would just restart the computer and try to start itunes and if I was lucky it would work, so I decided on a format and fresh install, this also had it's problems because I have a usb keyboard and mouse and obviously before you install the driver disc the keyboard/mouse is unusable which wasn't a problems while installing windows as I used a ps/2 keyboard, but when I came to install the driver disc I needed to move the mouse to press install all, finally got round that problem by going to devices and update usb driver, the reason I included that bit was I was wondering if then pressing install all after that could cause a problem similar to the one I am experiencing

Wouldn't think this is a driver issue, I would start by running full system scans using norton or a free program, ad adware, malware bytes.

Also could it be a memory issue? memtest should work for that.

thanks, I shall have a look at the programs you suggested, now that you mention memory it did come up with a message saying there was not enough memory to run the application on one occasion, I initially did the reformat to get rid of any viruses/spyware I may have picked up that avast didn't pick up on, I have heard of boot sector viruses that can survive a format, could this be the case? also I have put an old H.D.D in as a backup

Never heard of many boot sector viruses, but it is possible. I just don't think it's highly likely. Perhaps creating a backup of your master boot record before accessing or hooking up to the internet?

Not entirely sure, still working my way through a B.S. in information system security.

You seem to have a very nice system, and hopefully we can get this issue(s) hammered out so you can use it without worrying.

How did you do the format? Did you do a full or quick format? If you are still able to boot into windows then do the following.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

To remove the infection simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean the infection.

When it has finished cleaning the infection you will see a report stating whether or not it was successful as shown below.

If the log says will be cured after reboot, please reboot the system by pressing the reboot now button.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it. Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.

hmm, not to sure about the mbr, I had massivee trouble with this once before, I had Linux installed on dual boot and when I tried to remove it I had massive problems as nothing would boot, I finally worked out that is was the mbr file and eventually got it working but can't remember how so don't know if I dare try that again. tried mem test it got to 70% and still no errors but unfortunately ran out of time as we wanted to watch a film, tis not a bad system, there are aspects I would really like to improve such as the psu I would like to upgrade to Corsair, more ram and better graphics card but finances won't allow, still, better than the dual core 1.5gb ram I had previously

cheers, I ran the program and it came up with nothing, oh I forgot to say, it wil have been a quick format, I couldn't find and option for a full format on windows 7, used to the xp installation, I have ultimate boot c.d, i'm sure there's a way on there if you think it would be advantageous but to be fair that program confuses me a bit

You can download killdisk to a cd and let it delete the whole drive. I'm sure there is a utility on UBD.

strangely the computer is at present working after about the 5th format and fresh install, the only things I did differently this time around was remove the old H.D.D I had as a backup drive, then split my 1tb h.d.d into 2 and used the second half for backup which I am now nearly finished creating backups in, I also managed to get all my updates done including service pack 1, I have installed alot of my programs, about to install I tunes, i'm not holding my breath though, I thought it was working before and it went mental again, with killdisk would I just be able to delete the half that I am not using for backup or would it get rid of both?
