Proper PC Setup?

Well long story short-
I was having some BSOD problems after a CPU and RAM upgrade on my DAW computer. Everyone suggested a BIOS update even though there weren't any BIOS updates listed on the HP site (since the PC is pre-built). It was also suggested that I not mess with the BIOS if " don't really know what [I'm] doing."
So I gave it to a tech friend. I just wanted to record. Not deal with software issues.
Again, long story short, I've discovered that all he did was wipe my old Win 7 for a not genuine version of Win 7.
So I'm going to buy a genuine version of Windows 7 monday and install it.
But how should I "properly set it up"?

The hardware I can deal with fine at this point. I've been swapping out and installing multiple components on multiple types of computers for a few years now. The software, however- mainly BIOS- I was sort of hesitant to deal with. People made it out to seem like it was a nightmare of a difficult and fragile process. But now after this experience I'm ready to learn the proper way.

I mean, I know how to "optimize" a system via windows settings and the like. But what I want to know is what are these oh so fragile and crucial "updates" I seem to always hear about ?

Main example: "[you cant haphazardly do updates out of order]" what is that referring to.

whats that refering to is that whoever said that is crazy, lol

don't touch the bios, install windows,go to hp site and download the drivers for your computer-doesnt matter what order you install them, restart computer between installations, update windows-go watch tv for a hour-get a sandwhich, then come back and work on the settings...should be good but nothing is perfect and alot of poeple get errors anyway.

dont you have a windows key-number on the back of your computer, cant you just change the key on your computer with yours or borrow a windows cd and use your number, that would be legal.

yeah, I assumed updating is just that. It's been that way in my experience. I've done plenty of installs and updates before which is why when people make it sound real complicated i question myself as to whether im missing something. they make it sound like it's the cia and im trying to hack into the mainframe or something lol

The sticker on my computer is windows home premium
this guys got windows enterprise installed
can i work around that with my code or will i have to go find a home premium disc?

You can still use your product key, no need to buy a new one. And you can download and burn a copy of win7 for free. And its legal.

First you'll need a blank DVD-r disk. Download this .iso file:

http://www.w7forums.com/windows-7-iso-official-direct-download-links-t2910.html

You'll need to know if you have the 64-bit or 32-bit version. Probably 64-bit.

When its downloaded, burn it to the DVD-r using Imgburn:

When you're ready, boot to the CD and you can install windows. When it asks for the product key, just use the one off your tower.

Awesome! Yeah it's 64bit
And I've also learned that I can choose to repair windows from the install disc and not have to delete my 300 GB of sounds. And I rejoice.
