Proplem with second internal SATA drive

Hi all,

I got a really annoying problem with my new 320 GB Seagate Barracuda SATA harddisk. My first SATA HD works pretty fine. Hab no trouble so far. But now I installed a new one and partitioned it using Partition Magic 8.0. When I run my PC for a while sometimes the new 2 patitions on my new HD just disapear. When I reboot they are back again, but renamed as Local Disk and all Data is gone. Same happens when I just reboot my System. Everytime all data is gone and I can't even acces these partitions. I always have to reformat the disks to get access again. I have no idea what to do...:confused:

My system:

Prozesssor: Intel Core Duo 6850
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS4
RAM: 2GB 800
Video: Geforce 8800
HD: Seagate Barracuda 250 GB SATA
 
You don't have to repartition a drive to correct a Windows detection problem. The next time the drive disappears go into the device manager>disk drives if this is being seen in XP and right click on the new drive's icon there. Choose the uninstall option in the right click menu and restart the system. Windows will then prompt with the new hardware found message where you let Windows perform a search for the drivers.
 
I did it but still I have the same problems... the driver and the hard new hard disk is correctly setup in the device manager.

Anyway, everytime I try to access it I get the mesage:

H:\ is not accessible.
The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

Have you looked in the Disk Management tool under control panel>administrative tools>computer mangement>storage to see the drive is shown there and what that shows for partition information? Whch version of Windows there XP?

The Local Disk is Windows not the actual drive label if you have already give the partitions a name for each one. You may be dealing with a software problem as far as Partition Magic is concerned. You can either use the disk management tool or GParted for partitioning and right click while in the DM tool to see each logical drive formatted.

I am running the Windows XP pro corperate version. I already tried everything, I formated the HD using the Disk management tool. So far so good. But when I copy files on the Harddrive it is there as long as Windows is running. But when I reboot my system, everything is gone again. The names of the HDs as well as the data and the file system. That is the main problem I recon, cause Computer Management tells me that the partitions are basic and healthy. Only the column with the file system is blank... :confused:

And it tells me that all the space is free, even if I had copied about 30 GB before rebooting on it...

Fact is that I am running this new HD with 2 partitions, each 150 GB. Drive letters H: and G:. My other main working sata HD has 3 partitions: C: E: and F: Ny DVD-Drive is D:.

I am completly lost...

See you are running the corporate edition not the regular retail/OEM types you would order from newegg or some shopping site there. That sounds like it is too well geared for network application rather then regular desktop use.

You know the new drive is not seeing problems with the read/write heads since you can easily copy a good sized amount of data and then see the Windows itself lose track of everything. What is happening there is that Windows is resetting itself to before the drive was installed once you restart the system there.

On the last build here I triple booted XP Pro, Home, and Vista Home Premium and could easily access both pairs of hard drives(2 ide -2 sata) when booted into either of the three there. I think you will probably want to go for a different release of Pro to see this corrected if that edition is the problem there. That's likely more of a server type release of XP with those differences in play there.

Have you tried a different Sata port?
 
The present port is obviously working since there was no problem copying a large amount of data to the drive and having ready access to it. Besides Windows seeing a reset the other thing to look at would be a problem with the bios. A glitch in the programming might be fixed with an update since the drive isn't being seen until Windows is already loaded instead of redetected at each startup and added collectively with the other drives.
 
You could simply have a flaky data cable if there's problems found in the bios or with the board. Usually the red cables that come along with a board are far better then the typical grey flat ribbon type for ide drives that dry up and quit.
 
Just swaped the Sata data cables. Have some spare orange ones from the Mobo. But still the same prob. Guess I will try to get a new Win XP version and give it a go... If not maybe the HD is somehow ****ed up!?
 
I was thinking along those same lines about the HD being the problem there for some reason. Replacing a data cable was the cheaper way out however if that was flaky. You may want to look at the bios version you have now and see if that is the latest in case the programming is a little buggy.

Maybe you can swap the 350gb Seagate in for a WD 500gb model if the drive is bad. In the last decade and longer I've never seen one WD go while I've had to replace Seagates usually a good reliable alternative. That would get you out of a bad drive or possibly bad lot the vendor received?
