pros / cons of sdd

I was thinking of adding a ssd to go with my hdd on my rig. I keep hearing how great sdd's are for load times and gaming. I was thinking of the new samsung 470 series (220$ on neweg for 128gb) that comes with norton ghost software.

Is this a good drive? I would like the ghost software so I can just mirror my hdd onto the sdd without reinstalling windows 7 and use the hdd for videos and music and wutnot...then the sdd for os and games.

Any thoughts?

Its a good plan, but if I were you, I would go ahead and reinstall windows. it will detect the SSD and install trim and ll the other win 7 SSD goodies, and leave your system cleaner. Also, be sure that you only install what you need to the SSD, as it is going to be a lot smaller than your HDD.

Don't forget to enable AHCI in the BIOS.

SSD's are good, I will never go back to a mechanical for a primary disk :)

I have always heard the biggest con of sdd's is there limited write ability, that you could "use up" a sdd.

I had a friend of mine tell me that this is not really the case anymore tho, thqt new sdd's will work on a normal use schedule for 10ish years. Is this true? If so there is really no con of an sdd for an os drive besides maybe price

That was the assumption, but it will last at least 5 years, providing you don't overwrite it a ton, and you have a good one. That's the limit for most HDDs anyway.
