protect a backup CD

Well you can buy a safe and stick the CD in there with a password or key lock. ;)

Or do you mean protect it with a password so no one can see the files? Since it's a .zip, all you need to do is create a password and re-compress the files again in .zip format. That way people would need a password to look into the .zip file. It's not foolproof, but it's better then nothing.

Safes are fine unless someone steals the safe

I had in mind something a bit more protective than a password:)

btw how do you create a passowrd for a folder?

if you want to b uber safe and cool, your could encrypt all the data with a program such as "truecrypt" and then burn it after its been encrypted. But inless the government is after you, you probably wont need to do this.

I dont think the goverment is after me but I like sound of it anyway

what happens if you incrypt a file such as roboform idenenties(which are already incrypted)

run quickpar on that file make 25 percent recovery files and then split your files into rar files and delete maybe one of the files. :) when you want to get everything back just run those par files you created with that file.

about the only way you're going to keep people out is by using an encryption with a dongle-based decryptor

actually, scratch that. if someone wants your info, they're going to get it

you're either being paranoid, or backing things up you should probably just get rid of and 0-write over

The best way would be to backup your data to a macro flash drive, then insert that drive under your skin for safe keeping :)

if you're really concerned with the security of your files, you can use a plextor drive, their drives have proprietary encryption, which can only be read by another compatable plextor drive, using your password-key to decrypt the files

it's called secu-something........

their newest drives even let you 'erase' a non-rewriteable disk, by writing over the data, and destroying it

plextor always has some pretty cool technology, too bad their drives aren't as reliable as they used to be :(
