My store has two PCs in a large business complex. The connection is fairly fast but I don't know if it's cable or DSL or whatever else may be out here in the Vancouver area (I am the business owner's son but wasn't present when our two systems were set up here). Anyway, right in front of me I see a "D-Link Wired Router" and a "Thomson SpeedTouch". The SpeedTouch has green LEDs active for both "Internet", "Cable", and "DSL": that is why I'm confused if we're running on Cable or DSL here!
I'm very comptuer literate but know nothing about small networking set-ups like this. The two PCs here in the office can access each others' files by going to Windows XP's "My Network Places". Shared files are predominantly sub-classed there under "The Internet" rather than the sub-class called "Local Network" however. And I noticed that one PC can not overwrite a Word document that was made and stored on the other PC if I try to edit that document.
Someone installed "Windows Live OneCare" but I just uninstalled it because it made the PC run really slow on start-up, unbearable. So most importantly, I'm interested in knowing a good product to protect such a network as the one I've described above. Our antivirus has expired and wondered if I need something more than just one antivirus program to protect this 2-PC network.
I appreciate it. Thanks
