PS/2 Mouse Randomly Stopped working

So I built my computer in august of this year. Soltek Mobo (SL-K8AN2E-GR), AMD Athlon 64 3200+, radeon 9800 pro, 512 mb ddr ram, and windows xp home. I have a microsoft Wheel mouse optical (original name huh? lol) and it has a usb to ps/2 converter. It has always worked on my moms comp, and worked on mine...until a few days ago. One night i shut down my computer, i woke up the next morning and it never actually shut down and said a program was not responding...it woudln't shut off any other way so i had to flip the power switch in the back. I came back from school booted it up and my mouse wasn't working, the LED light wasn't coming on and no response. My key board was perfectly fine. I tried another ball mouse in the ps/2 slot, no response from that either. I pluged the optical into the USB port and it worked fine. I researched this and found two possible problems, the BIOS got a bug in it, or the ps/2 slot fried...I hope the latter is not true, but makes less sense because then wouldn't the keyboard's ps/2 be fried as well? So thats where I am now. I hope someone can shed some light on this issue and hopefully give me a soloution other then trying to upgrade my BIOS. Thank you.

PS2 (is it mice or mouses?) ones have a slot designated for them on most mobos, but if you use a lot of usb stuff, you might run out of slots and need to buy usb hubs (which aren't THAT cheap). That said, I'ven't tried a usb mouse, so can't argue about its funtionality.

On topic, isn't there 2 ps2 slots, one for keyboard and one for mouse? If so, if one burn, the other might still work, right?
