Hey guys my 500W PSU burnt out 2 weeks after i upgraded from my old ASUS A8V-E Deluxe motherboard to a new Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe - x16 SLI Motherboard. I think my psu could not come with the new features on the motherboard. i turned it on last night the motherboard light turned on and i could just smell metalic burning. when i noticed i unplugged everything, and opened up my comp to see where it was coming out of, everything seemed to be fine, i tuck out the cpu the memory and everything seemed fine, then i smelled the fan on the PSu and it stank of burnt metal, i took it out opened it and it smelled even worst, there were no burn marks or anyhting in it just a bad smell. what was viers is that the smell was comming out of my PSU, but it was still sending power to my motherboard led, it was wierd...

my system is custom built:

Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe - x16 SLI Motherboard
AMD 64 Dual core 3800
Nvidea Geforce 6800 PCI
3gig ram
PSU 500w Burnt out...

Certainly sounds like it's time for a new PSU. A generic/crappy 500W unit will certainly have trouble with that sort of load. If you're looking for recommendations on a replacement unit, please tell us your budget.

I can easily "second the notion on" cheapy crap 500w makes people jump on or have included in the case they order. What vendors can you order from? That will help along with ceewi1's question.

The PSU was the one i recieved with my comp when i bought it i dont know what make it is? i just upgraded my motherboard and everything semed to be working fine untill the other day the comp just wouldnt turn on, and the smell was coming out of my PSU. i bought a new 600w unit and put it in my comp, but it still wouldnt turn on, not even the led light on my motherboard? i wast thinking of taking everything down to a pc repair shop so they can check out which component is broken. does anyone know how much this would cost?

If you saw a bad cap in the supply short that may have cooked the board along with it. Too bad you couldn't test the new supply to see if that is what is bad there to rule that out. No lighting leds suggests one of those two. The board was cooked or the new supply needs to be returned. That's the hardware fault department there. Have you rechecked all connections and inspected the board itself for anything... odd?
