Is the psu calculator accurate enough for me to follow it closely?
Just take for instance, the intel duo core 6850 and the 8800gt only need about less than 300W including other standard devices, eg. 2gb ram, 1 hard disk, 1 dvd writer and maybe a few case fans.
Does this means that any 400w psu is good enough to power that setup?
 
lol no 400W isnt gonna power that setup too well, i imagine. get something along the lines of a Corsair HX520 (i think its called HX520 ill have to check)

or an OCZ gamexstream like the one in my sig
 
Would a Corsair 520W be too overkill for the following system?

intel core 2 duo e6750 cpu
gigabyte p35-ds3r motherboard
1gb kingston ddr2 pc-6400 800mhz X 2 sticks ram
gigabyte 8800gt 512mb graphic card
250gb western digital 16mb harddisk
sony 20x dvd writer

maybe another 2 or 3 case fans

Would be planning to get either the antec 900 or tsunami dream case.

Would also really appreciate if you can review my new rig at the same time.
 
that PSU would not be overkill, it is just about right, some say overkill by about 10$ and 20 Watts, but its a powerful PSU and you would hate to kill your system because you failed to see the need for an adequate PSU
 
Just a final question. Is the Corsair 520W a modular psu? I have read from Ceewi1 PSU guide that a modular psu would have lesser efficency than a one without.
 
the difference in efficiency between a modular PSU and a non modular one is usually very negligible, but there is a difference, however small
 
As for the Corsair vs Seasonic, there's really not much between the two. They're both based on the same platform (Seasonic make the HX series for Corsair). The Corsair will be quieter, given that it doesn't have the rear fan, has a 5 year vs 3 year warranty, is generally cheaper and has, IMO, a nicer cabling system.

For those reasons I'd probably go with the Corsair, but they're both superb PSUs.

Praetor wrote that one, not me. I suggest reading through Modular Power Supplies: The Reality of the Resistance, as it goes into the issue in some depth. Suffice to say the effect is not very significant, and is, in my opinion, easily outweighed by the convenience of having a modular power supply.

That said, if you'd prefer to go with a power supply with fixed cables, the Corsair VX550 is superbly priced (significantly cheaper than the HX520), and just as good from a quality standpoint.
 
You need to make sure that you set the CPU utilization to 100% or so, I believe by default it's only around 50%, so that will also add to the number of watts you would need.
