alright this problem started a couple weeks ago but only happened once so i shrugged it off until it hapened again ... today ... what happens is after i turn my computer off and turn it on or restart ill get an error indicator with the leds on the motheroard telling me there's a vga error or it will boot with no problems on the lights but it will stay on my screen where i can enter bios(the one where it says press del etc)but it wont go any further and it will keep doing this after countless restarts but i found that sometimes after i unplug everything from the power supply except the mother board that i wont get the vga error(i dont know if it gets past the screen because of no hard drive) and after reconecting everything again it will sometimes boot( i normally do this 2 or 3 times before it works)i think this might be a power supply issue as my other components have never had issues

my power supply is a cheapo that came with my case 300w with 16a on my one 12v rail which is another reason why i suspect this to be the issue

thanks for your help

ok first off, a PSU wouldnt really cause errors such as this unless it was SERIOUSLY undervolting, at 16a +12v i still doubt it would be undervolting that much to cause errors like that.

Next, you have already established that when you disconnect drives etc, it will boot fine, so try a process of elimination, try only one hard drive etc.. no CD drives, then plug one at a time in and bott up, sooner or later you will find the culprit. If it happens at seemingly random times, then your probably looking at a dead mobo or dodgy RAM, to test the RAM you shold download and run "memtest86+" run it for a good few hours and see if any errors come up in your RAM.

Are you running on onboard VGA or an addin card?

its now a process of elimination, dragon

i have tried the cd and hdd drives one at a time neither has caused errors so it cant be those ill run a memory test tonight when i get a chance and if that isnt the issue then its the motherboard?

Well, yes, the motherboard or the video card (if your not running onboard). Some may start to argue that your CPU is bad, i doubt it, broken CPU's in this fashion are extremely rare, they either work or they dont, so i dont think thats the problem.

well after 10 hours of running i checked on it and only 1 error had come up in the memory but im not familiar with memtest so this is what it said:

tst-8 pass-0 failing adress-00000efa 14.1mb good-ffffffff bad-ffefffff err-bits-00100000 count-19 chan-(nothing)

i also thought of something else one of my sticks of memory is ddr 400 pc3200 and the other is ddr333 pc2700 they are also different brands would this cause any problems?

and yes im using onbaord for now

Update-I got the BSOD:( it was during age of empires 2 so it was extremly light gaming it had an error message and told me to restart and when i did i got the vga error again so i did what u said and unplugged my ide hdd and dvd drive and when i turned it on it worked so i plugged in just my hdd and it worked but with just my dvd drive or my dvd drive and my hdd it didnt so i switched the ide cable on my dvd drive and it worked instantly

i did cut my ribbon cables so i could round them off and i noticed a bit of copper wire out of the insolation could this cause a short of some kind? or it might have been just dumb luck

i have tested the dvd drive on 2 other systems with no problems so could it possibly be the ide connectors on the mb doing this?

according to that article its my proccessor memory or power supply? so proccessor errors are very rare so its probably not that? my power supply is what i thought was wrong but you guys said it doesnt sound like it? and the memory is what failed a test and is also stated on there so would you suggest i rma my memory?

It is most likely your power supply. 16A on the 12V won't power much. Besides, it is something that you should replace anyways. My friend had a power supply with 15A on the 12V, running an AMD 64 3200+, 1GB of DDR, 6800XT, and the thing blew. Good thing it didn't take out his computer.

well actully when i buy my new graphics card im buying a new power supply too but if im gonna have to rma a motherboard and memory then it will be a while...
