PSU power usage

Since my thread got lost:
Will a PSU use all of it's (for example) 400W if it's just idle or playing music?

The Only suplies power to the hardware that is opperating. e.g. if u have music playing from the hard drive then power will only be used for the hard drive and any other divice operating to play the music

hope this helps

So it wont use all 400W for a CPU, HD, fans and mobo, meaning my electric bill shouldn't be as high?

Depends on the PSU. Some PSUs will specifically drain out the max and then deliver only what you need (and bleed out the rest). Most dont though

The only model i know that does a constant drain are the Ultra X-Connects (which is the exact reason im buying them :P)
Doesn't that cost more, electrical bill-wise?

Yes but utilities are included in the rent :P

I don't think it would break the bank though
When the stuff in your room is capable of doing 1.4KW·h ....

well.........ask daddy for some money, that is the only suggestion I can give ya
LOL not all of us are leeches.

Out of curiosity, what is the advantage of a PSU doing this? And how is the excess power bled? All I can think of is a variable/controllable conversion efficiency so the unused power is converted to heat, but that doesn't sound like a great method.

Im no electrician but I would imagine for cases where people do hotswapping of devices there isnt a "bump" in the drain when things are added/removed .... realistically its prolly nothing more than a marketing gimmick

I havnt the foggiest .... hehehe they make the PSU fan spin REALLY REALLY fast :P
