PSU question

Any good supply from 450w and up will easily work. With two optical drives plus 3 HDs here with a 6000+ X2 125x cpu and a mid range card a 700w supply was selected in order to allow for expansion with more drives added and other types of devices that can added onto the system. It also depends on the type of build there.

ya i also have 2 optical drives and 2 hard drives, so you think 450W

How do I check the number of Watts on my current one.

I ran a lower end Radeon X1300 Pro on the last build with a match pair of ide HDs as well as the matched pair of sata HDs still in use now along with two optical drives there with an Antec TP2 480w supply used there. A short time before planning out the new case I moved that up with the TP2 550w model still in use in the old case since I ended up loaning out the 480w upon first getting the 550 in.

For heavy gaming, ocing, additional devices powered by the system as well then you might want to step up a little more to cover the extras. What price range are you looking at? A 450w or higher will start at $80 or so depending on where you order from.Take a look at the sticky on supplies to see the good and bad lists there before deciding. http://www.computerforum.com/90118-useful-psu-case-guides.html

$93.99 for the Corsair HX520 520w supply was the best seen at this time for that model. http://www.buy.com/prod/corsair-520w-sli-certified-modular-atx-power-supply/q/loc/101/203270716.html

I give that one the edge over the OCZ StealthXStream 600w model seen for $89.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341010

Both compainies make some great supplies as well as the slightly lower amps on the 12v rails seen with the Antec TP3 650w model that goes over your price range there by $15. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371001 Here I paid about $140 for the OCZ GameXStream 700w model to allow for expansion on the work horse type build here. :P

I used a 1000W Ultra X3, because I got it cheap ($324 with an AMD X64 FX62 2.8GHz CPU). This to run that CPU, one HD, one optical, an 8600GTS, sound card, four fans and a Zalman.

No, I'm not lamenting my stupidity.

It doesn't matter what you want on the comp now, what do you think you'll want on the computer in a year? Two years? Me, I want to have an SLI'd pair of G92'd 8800GTS's and a Raptor HD by summer. Lord knows what I'll want six months after that, and Lord knows what the power requirements will be by then.

My point is...shop within your budget, but remember that you won't want to plunk down another $100 a year from now when your power supply won't handle your next planned mod.

Or when that happens, you could just hack out two 5" drive bays and wedge a 250W PSU to power your new gleaming video card. Laugh not, I have seen it done.

The Antec TP2 550w model used in the last build was quite adequate still for the new build in use now since I generally run everything stock. Why 700w then? I can easily add more and cover the additional load with a good stable and well regulated supply. Plus the larger supply also means more power connections available for drives and case fans for the added cooling seen in the Antec 900 case.

If you are on a tight budget the second supply needed later on the other hand leaves the current one simply as a spare onhand in case the next one goes doa on you and you simply throw the old one in for temporary use until replaced again. If I didn't have the 480w still onhand when upgrading to the 550 a friend would have been out in the cold when his 480 supply... didn't quite make it.
