I just pulled off my heatsink on my motherboard - it was quite stiff - and the cpu came off with it attached with the thermal paste - all the pins seem to be unharmed - i hope this hasnt damadged the cpu - do you think it has ? Also should i pull the cpu off and put it back into the package it cam ein until i get my new mothebroard - or shall i keep it stuck onto the heatsink and put it in like that on my new mothebroard - if i take it off would i need some new thermal paste ?

thanks

yes... if you took it off you have to apply a new layer of thermal paste... but make sure that you clean it first before applying any new layer of thermal paste...

Ok will do - how comes it came off with the heat sink - surely it shouldn't do that - i hope it hasn't damaged it - shall i just pry it off with a knife or something?

Sounds like it was put on with some epoxy. The only way to tell (assuming it didn't come apart) is to put it back in and see if it works. To remove epoxy acetone works best, you'll have to use something to get it inbetween the heatsink and the CPU. I wouldn't pry at it unless you've tried everything else first, if you cool it off the epoxy will get brittle and will make it easier to pry the heatsink off then you can clean the rest off with acetone or even fine grit sandpaper.

I managed to pull it off - but it took my dad to do and he struggled - i don't know why is stuck together it was the stock thermal paste from amd

I've had the same thing happen with an AMD processor... I was removing the heatsink and the CPU came with it... which might be bad as the CPU should not be removed while it's release lever is down, but I had no problems with it afterwords... so no harm done.

Thermal paste can cause HSFs to stick firmly to CPUs. For future reference, heating the HSF up somewhat will usually cause the CPU to come straight off. A safer solution than brute force.

You're not meant to pull it off. You're meant to slide it to the edge, then slide it off the heatsink (that's what I did). The paste creates a very strong vacuum effect if you try to simply pull it off.
