I do not have time to build a computer for my 13yr old nephew. He has been using one of my very old builds after his was destroyed in hurricane Sandy which is now not working either now. He does not game, but does things most teenagers do with iTunes, watches video, minor Photoshop and video editing, Powerpoint etc.

I was thinking of these two:

does anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks

Both computers are very similar in specs. If you go with either of these, just be aware that your nephew will not be able to play any new games enjoyably, as both have integrated video.

EDIT: I skimmed your post initially and missed the part that said he doesn't game. These will work for what he needs, granted any photo and video work will be slow. If you are set on these two, I would go with the Dell.

Thank you, I am not totally set, but my nephew and sister are a very restricted budget. My sister is a single mom and they had a lot of expenses that weren't covered with insurance. He is sleeping on an air mattress and his furniture consists of milk crates for now. I just want to get them the best I can in this price range. If you have something else in mind let me know.
Thanks.

I'm so sorry to hear about that situation, I work with families who are in similar situations.

Are you sure you want to get a desktop? It seems like a laptop may be a better choice, and something that both of them can share more easily - especially if you don't have the proper furniture for a desktop. You can find many in the same price range, let me know if you want some ideas for laptops.

Sure, I'm open for suggestions. The reason we were looking for a desktop is I thought we would get more for the money as opposed to a laptop. I gave him a 19" lcd monitor and my parents are getting him a desk and chair soon. What did you have in mind?

It really sucks your family is in that position. You have my condolences. Now, for computers, I agree with Geoff a desktop may be a better idea. Your nephew can always hook it up to a LCD if he wants too. Here are some good options, and both of these have pretty decent specs.

Why getting laptop?
Slower than desktop, no way to upgrade

I mentioned laptops as if you're looking for a basic computer with integrated video, spec wise your going to find very similar machines for the price for both desktops and laptops. At $500 you're looking at a decent entry level desktop or laptop.

I would have though if you got same amount of money, desktop hardware usually be faster than what you can get with laptop.

I would agree with you Daisy, but for low end builds ($500 and below) the difference usually isn't that big.
