purchasing refurbished IBM

Hey, I'm about to buy a refurbished IBM laptop through their employee discount program (family member). I am looking for something for internet and word processing. I'm a college student and work 24 hour shifts on the weekends with a lot of downtime so i need something to do homework on. I would spend more but i'm only using it for one year and I have a great desktop.

I don't know anything about laptops, or even computers in general. I see obvious differences, seems like the cheaper one is better even though I'll have to purchase a wireless card for that one. (how much are those by the way and is there one you recommend?)

$350 Pentium 4 (R32)
1.8 GHz
XP prof
256MB/1024MB
30GB
14.1 inch
DVD-ROM
no wireless

$405 Pentium III (X24 (NU2) w/ Port replicator)
1.13 GHz
XP home
640MB/640MB
20 GB
12 inch
CD rom
802b wireless LAN

I would appreciate your help! I don't need anything extremely fast, but if there is a huge difference between these 2 that I'm not noticing, please let me know. (difference between pentium 3 and 4? between 256 and 640 MB?)

The only thing the P3 has over the P4 at the moment is the wlan and ram, which is fully upgradeable if you choose to do so. If your homework isn't intensive and require a lot of power, the P4 will be a good choice and if you choose to, an extra 50 bucks can get you a wifi card/usb and an extra stick of memory to have atleast 512mb.
