Putting media on DVD

I have a movie on my computer I want to transfer onto a dvd. I have nero and the program didnt do well. I burned it on and it wpuld not play on my dvd player. Do I need to change the format or get a new program or both?
 
formats to play on home dvd players are avi, mpeg2 and mp4 depends on your dvd player the most common is avi never came across a player that didnt support, nero isnt as good as some ppl think i use windows dvd maker and they always play in dvd player, but ashampoo burning studio is also good.
