We just got a new dell with windows xp profesional on it to replace our old compaq with windows 98. We got a mcafee backup disk with it so i decided to try it on our old computer since we had no virus protection on it. It said we had about 3500 viruses on it. Is there any way to clear every thing and install windows xp onto the compaq? Thank for the help.

you will need to buy another copy of win xp...i think. and then you can reformat the computer by just inserting the win xp CD in the CD drive, booting from the CD and follow the on-screen instructions :D:P

First you will need a WinXP DISC then put it in the COMPAQ and boot up with CD-ROM (change that in the BIOS). Then go thought the XP setup and it will give you the option to format the HDD ! then after that winXP will install.

EDIT: DAM its too late for me lol, been BEATEN for the 2nd time tonight :( O well LOL bed time!

I put the disk in and followed the directions. The computer restarted and the setup started. The only problem is that it says it cant copy any of the files. i restarted the computer to start over again but it wont go into windows 98. It just goes back into the setup. So put the disk in and tried it from that spot. It gets to the same spot and says it cant copy the files. What should i do?

If it was designed for Win98, I'd stay with Win98, or switch to Linux. It probably has some incredibly low amount of RAM.

not necessarily... mine wus designed for windows 98
but i put XP on and at the time i had 450MHz pIII, 192MB ram, 20gb harddrive, and it ran a little slowly, but then i put in a 866mhz pIII and it ran very smoothly... but it might b bcus the P3 slot 1s are very strong for old processors:P

waiting for 256mb more ram:)

You might want to look on the Win XP box at min requirements and then check to see that your computer at least meets those requirements.

I'm using the backup disk from the dell computer.
that will probably be why you are getting the errors then, i think the dell disks are locked to only install on computers will dell bios's, there fore you will need to go out and buy xp, but first check compatability, if you're not sure then post the specs of the pc on here, as it may be that the PC isn't even compatible with XP
