Q6600 Fan = Loud

Hey all, first post and im nagging for help, isnt that great?

The situation is that - my computer is LOUD! Not sure if the CPU bios settings are setup incorrect or if the fan is dodgy ( though its new, so it shouldnt be), the old stock fan was quite loud(also tried using my friends old stock fan), so I decided to go out and buy a new fan (golden orb 2), which i installed - and which was also going the same RPM and also equally loud as the two previous fans - so im pretty sure that the fan itself is not faulty, but it must have something to do with the connection or the bios settings. The golden orb has a 3pin connector into the motherboard - and here are some of the CPU bios settings ( which i have no idea about at all )

2168 RPM
CPU Fan Speed - Ignored
CPU Q-Fan - Disabled
Chassis Fan 1 Speed - N/A
Chassis Fan 2 Speed - N/A
Chassis Q-Fan Control - Enabled
Chassis Fan Ration - 60%
Chassis Target Temp - 39c
CPU Voltage 1.296v

Specs
q6600 intel CPU
geforce 9800gtx
4gb corsair gaming ram
p5k PRO motherboard

Not really sure what other details you guys might need, ill be keeping an eye on this thread so any suggestions on fixing the problem - or any more details you need will get a quick reply.

You can give speed fan a go if you hav´nt already tried it.
It should give you some sort of control over your fan speeds, just keep an eye on the temps when you lower the RPM´s.

I downloaded what you suggested and tried setting the speeds of everything to 80% - the Sys Fan RPM didnt change at all - not sure if I used it correctly though, never used the program.

I´d replace it if you can´t lower it , I mean case fans can be picked up for peanuts.

Just look for one that has max 16db noise.

Also you have some temp issues , especially your Hard drive.

As I said in my first post, ive tried with multiple fans and all have had the same problem, im pretty certain its got something to do with my bios settings, which i have no idea about

In regards to the hard drive temp, i have no idea why one of my hardrive's is fine, and the other is higher.

ive tried with multiple fans

Then your buying the wrong ones. Have a look in the general chat, at my pc photo´s. I have three fans that do not go over 1000 RPM there for do not go over 14 - 16 DB. If you can´t get that system fan to go down by using the MB connections, just use a connector that comes with most case fans and attach it to a 12v power supply IE: spare Hard drive power.

The current fan im using has no issues in my friends computer, its quiet as a mouse - its a max 17db fan (the goldenorb)

So yeah, can i get anyone elses inputt ?

That´s your CPU cooler fan , not the system fan.

In yor Bios you should be able to adjust it.

Q-Fan 2
Adjusts both CPU fan and chassis fan speeds according to system loading
ASUS Q-Fan2 technology intelligently adjusts both CPU fan and chassis fan speeds according to system loading to ensure quiet, cool and efficient operation.

Check to see if it is enabled in your bios, if it is already enabled try disabling it. Your temps are also playing a big part in this as in they are quite high, therefor you fans are working overtime to counteract this problem. You really need to address this before you start lowering fan speeds or it´s gonna get hotter.

might just give up and take it into a repair shop then

CPU Q-Fan - Disabled

Dude, I just noticed that you have it disabled , go into your bios and enable it.
See if that makes a difference.
Also, after that take the side panel off your PC and check and see if your temps drop. A photo of the inside might help us to see the problem as well.

I enabled it - this is what the current settings look like, RPM didnt change at all

Not exactly sure what inside you want me to take pics of. Dont mind the dust, im going to clean it out :good:

Yeh that dust has got to go, See the buildup on the edge of the orb fan fins.
This will always create an annoying sound but only slightly.
Your Hard drives are too close together. You have tons of space to spread them out. 64 degrees on a HD is too much and bordering on a possible failure. You could put 1 on the bottom and one in the middle slots.

Most of your problems seem to be from excessive temps
http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php This is a good free temp program.

Are you overclocking it?

The noise is definitely coming from the Orb ? It´s not the PSU or GPU fan ?

Did taking the side of the case off drop the temps?

Yes the noise is coming from the CPU fan, not the power supply or gcard - taking the case off did not drop the temperatures, and the noise is not being caused by the dust - as when the system was brand new - it was the same.

No overclocking as far as i know, i really do not know very much

I did not read responses so this may have been stated already. If your smart fan option is disabled in bios your fan will run at 100% 24/7, change Q-Fan to "auto" or "enabled", whatever works.

Okay so, run into a bit of a problem with the bios displaying CPU error message.

Currently using bios 'defaults' but it still comes up with the same message.

Also tried putting on Q-fan, theres
CPU Q-Fan
Chassis Q-Fan Control

Should they both be enabled ? i tried but they seem to restore back to previous settings even though I save the bios settings.

Also, still no change on RPM on the CPU

OK, so if you disable the CPU Q-Fan , does the option above it for CPU fan speed give you options other than N/A as shown in your photo?
Did you say your friend has the same MB ? perhaps you could check his/her current settings in bios.

do you have the CPU Fan connected to the right connector on the motherboard (and not to one of, say a case Fan?
what motherboard do you have?

edit: nvm, its a p5k pro I jsut saw. >.<

edit: by the looks of things ( http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=FBdeaPoril4e6aeu )
your motherboard has the CPU fan connector next to the big connector of the powersupply. (the 24 pin one) and right next to the CPU fan connector is a connector for a case fan. make sure you have the CPU fan connected to the right one. (the CPU fan connector has 4 pins, case fans only have 3. (at least, my asus boards all did so far, probably because the stock intell cooler has 4 cables for some reason. )

stupid work pc's dont have paint installed, else I could mark it for you. :(

The 3 pin connector goes into the CPU 4pin :P

Not really sure what it could be - its in the right connector, i set the q-fan to silent mode, therefore the RPM should change, but it doesnt / wont - its a constant 2100 from boot and never really changes

Edit, something weird happend today - CPU speed went upto 60 degrees celsius (same fan RPM), nothing on the pc was running and its a fairly cool day and cool inside my room

disabled q-fan and only allowed chassis q-fan on (which was already on) temps now at 35-37
god this computer is going to give me a headache
