hi i have just built my new pc and i am wondering about over clocking the cpu
i have never done it before and i no nothing about it so could some one give me some advice on weather it is worth doing and if it is how to do it please.

Do you know the stepping, B3 or G0? you can use CPUZ to tell you this. Also check out the Overclocking 101 thread. The most common way is to up the FSB little at a time

Yeah, up the FSB. If it is B3, you probably want to get an after-market heat sink, seeing as the Q6600 B3 runs very hot.

i downloaded CPUZ and it says stepping B and revision GO my heatsink is a Thermalright SI-128 CPU Cooler with a 120mm fan and my cpu idles between 17.0c and 23.0c depending on the temp in the room

The q6600 is just two E6600 stuck together. The E6600 I know from first hand experience overclocked really well, so I would think the q6600 should have a reasonable overclocking overhead as well. But then the CPU can go only as fast as the slowest core, so you can safely overclock it to the point where one core becomes unstable.

MY ABIT MOBO HAS ITS OWN UTILLITY TO PUT THE CPU ON TURBO SO I DID THAT AND WROTE DOWN ALL THE SETTIMGS THEN I WENT INTO BIOS AND SET IT IN THERE HERE IS WHAT I DID
EXTCLK 293MHZ
VCORE 1.4125V
DDR2 1.950V
MCH 1.25V TO 1.37V
ICHIO 1.20V TO 1.27
ICH 1.05V TO 1.12V
sorry about the capitals i didnt notice untill i had written it.
my cpu is idling at 25c i did 3dmark 06 before oc and the score was 10650 after oc it is 11168 the cpu temp went up to 30c during the test is that ok and have i done everything alwright i dont want to kill my pc.

I am hardly an expert in OC but 30c seems like a good temperature and you can go for more I guess. Wait until someone with more experience comment on this. But in my opinion, you can go for a little more.

30*c is where I idle... if your loading at 30*c, you need to overclock it a lot more...

*EDIT* might want to check to make sure that is really what you are loading at. It doesn't sound right even for a CPU at stock settings.
