quad cores for 3ds MAX rendering?

Hi all, I have been doing some research in order to buy a new CPU and motherboard to increase rendering times in 3ds max, but I feel a little overwhelmed now and need a little advice.

Need to buy new CPU and mobo (to support quad cores). and budget of ~$550

some options at tigerdirect
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...me=Intel-Core-2-Quad-Socket-775-Processor-OEM

Q6600 $200
Q6700 $260
Q9300 $280

now I am wondering if it's really worth it to buy Q6700 or Q9300 , and what would be the performance difference when rendering,

I couldn't find benchmarks comparing those, so either advise or links or more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am planning to overclock it also! a little bit.

thanks in advance

hey thanks, I'm checking those out, but still I don't see the advantage of the Q9300 over the Q6600, compared to the price

I render with vray generally, but I want to get into mental ray too, soon.

In order to increase 3 dimensional rendering, you would need a better GPU.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

JLV2k5, GPU is good for real time 3D , but not rendering, which relies more on complicated calculations (CPU) and memory.

someone correct me if I'm wrong :)

For a processor....
I would recommend the Q9450. :)
Is has double the cache of the Q9300.

Link to the Q9450: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115042

Link to a comparative chart. (Q9300 Vs. Q9450): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...mpareItemList=N82E16819115042,N82E16819115043

Hope this helps. :)

Edit: If you were to choose this processor, on your current budget of $550 you would still be able to afford a motherboard around $200-$220.
If someone's going to suggest a motherboard try to make it around the $200 mark.

Exactly, video cards like Quadro FX and FireGL that are meant for CAD and different modeling software are usually only used when you are "constructing" the scene. The actual final rendering is done by the CPU, however there are renderers that can use the GPU in order to render a scene even faster. I think Mental Ray utilizes the GPU in the newer versions but I'm not familiar with 'em so I don't know if you have to set it to do so manually. Gelato does utilize GPU's and is one of the few that also accepts "typical" desktop video cards like the 8800 and 9800 series etc.
