i have 768 mb of ram i was wondering when i use pc games do i use all 768 mb of ram or am using whats left out of what isnt being used by the desktop application

Since Windows is still running, you are only using what is left after hte other programs use what they need.

The first chunk out of memory is taken by the board itself for system resources. Out of the first 512mb of ram upto 200mb can easily be reserved for system hardwares. Windows and backrground services take a small portion there. With dual channel mode most of those along with minimized apps are forced onto the secondary channel in favor of the primary application loaded at a given time.

is that the reason why

some games like scarface the world is yours gets sorta slow at times? or runs a bit slow slight be slow not slow at all but not perfectly fast

When gaming the most often given advice is to exit all background apps in order to free up system resources. That can usually mean any antivirus programs too. The dual core cpus offer more support for multitasking along those lines where some things like system services have to remain running. This is where the msconfig utility can help by reducing the number of programs that load up along with Windows. By clearing the list of unnecessary startups you simply start what you want to run manually.

You keep telling people to use the msconfig to stop startup programs, the correct way is to go into the program and uncheck startup with windows. msconfig is really used as a trouble shooter, you should only use it to stop startup programs if there is no option in the program to not start with windows!!

From microsoft
The System Configuration utility automates the routine troubleshooting steps that Microsoft Product Support Services Support Professionals use when they diagnose system configuration issues

hey i forgot how to do that

i forgot how to run my system startup to make it so nothing starts up unless i make it startup can somebody tell me how to change my programs off like that so nothing starts up unless i tell it too can you teach me that so i can free up applications and see if it squeezes out more game performance to free up more ram

Not all programs have the option to disable them from loading along with Window. And reducing the amount of things loading also frees up cpu time as well as ram to often see the gain in system performance. That's covered under the "troubleshooting/Windows tweaks" dept.! For other "Windows "tweaks" and problem solving you can goto http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm :D

i quicker and less permanent thing to do would be to ctrl, alt, del into task manager and close the programs you don't want to run while you play the game. the next time you boot up, everything will be back to normal again.

you could just get more ram - it costs money but its less work too :D
haha

Increasing memory for some of the new games out as well as reducing the stuff running the background is often the recommendations seen at game support sites. :D When problems are seen the tech staffs usually point out the need to exit all programs running in the background other then the essential services due to the demand on system resources. Why stop to unload everything when you can set them not to autoload in the first place! :D
