Question about aborting virus scans, does it still quarantine?

Okay I switched from Norton to BitDefender. During the BitDefender quick scan it picked up two pieces of malware before it was finished. I decided to do a "deep system scan" instead and aborted the quick scan about 80% through. The subsequent deep system scan picked up no malware. There are items in quarantine, however, they're all in files labeled as:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\

This leads me to believe these were previously quaratined viruses that Norton had picked up and BitDefender recognized and moved. My question is this, will an antivirus such as BitDefender take appropriate action against malware during the scan or do you have to wait until the scan has completed and then direct it to clean/quarantine? It's not passing over malware because it thinks I wanted to take no action because I aborted a scan, is it? :rolleyes: Also deleting the quarantined viruses from the BitDefender graphic interface doesn't effect the fact that it's still quaratined, does it? Because I just went down the list and deleted everything. (Dumb move, I know) Thanks in advance.

What just BitDefender did is take the viruses that Norton found in and where put in Norton's quarantine and cleaned/deleted/moved them to BitDefender's quarantine (depends on what action settings you selected). The viruses that you have in your quarantine are removed completely from their previous location so it is absolutely safe to delete them as long as you didn't restored them :).

Concerning your dilemma in stopping the scan you shouldn't be so worried because once BitDefender detects a virus it take an action immediately (without user permission or it could ask you but only if you selected this from your options). But it's highly recommended to let the scan finish even though it takes to much for the first time.

Hope that helps.

P.S.

You could send the viruses next time to BitDefender next time before deleting them so they can analyze them and improve the detection of new viruses and variants of viruses.

Hi there, that's pretty much the info I needed, thanks a lot. In retrospect I know I should have let that scan complete but after detecting the two viruses I got giddy and wanted to do a complete system scan. If BitDefender takes appropriate action during a scan I don't think anything got screwed up because I don't remember seeing or hitting anything for restore. I also now understand what you're saying about BitDefender analyzing the malware. When I was doing this it was right after I had installed it and I was unfamiliar with the program. Overall I am happy with it and glad I went from Norton to BitDefender. Thank you for the information, next time I wont delete everything so hastily.

EDIT: I just found the scan log...

It continues with more of the Norton folder business so I wont post the whole thing because it's big. Looks like it's just Norton relocations though. Thanks again.

You see??

Action

Infected objects
[ ] Ignore
[X] Disinfect
[ ] Delete
[ ] Move to quarantine
[ ] Prompt user

Second action
[ ] Ignore
[ ] Delete
[X] Move to quarantine
[ ] Prompt user

These actions are configurable from BD's control panel.

And more:...

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\0628563A.htm=>(Quarantine-2) Infected: Exploit.ADODB.Stream.AK
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\0628563A.htm=>(Quarantine-2) Disinfection failed

That shows that BD didn't managed to clean it but instead moved it to quarantine and from there it just waits for an order form you :D

Glad I could help you out.
