Question about anonymous proxies

I have a friend who regularly downloads movies and music from various sites. I tell him that he is going to get into trouble, but he claims that because he uses an anonymous proxy, that he won't. Can someone explain to me how this works? Does his internet provider know what he is downloading when he uses this software? Or do they just see that he is downloading something from the anonymous proxy address? I am concerned about his behavior and would like to present him with some facts. Thanks in advance.

The proxy thing is when your hide your ip behind another, hackers use this and they "bounce" it around the globe sometimes, it takes something to follow, but if they want to, they will, and his ISP will see something, but i am not sure whether they will see his IP
