Just bought a soundcard and I'm wondering what kind of file format delivers the best quality sound to a 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 surround sound system. from what i understand mp3 delivers only 2 channels and no sub.???..

If I want to utilize a 5.1 system through my reciever and a fiber optic cord, what file format for music do I need to download?

Then I geuss my next ques is if there is ever versions of music released made for 6.1 surround sound.

thx

Mp3 is a stereo format (2 channels) but if you are running Vista, you can enable "Speaker Fill" which will play the sound on all of your speakers rather than just the left and right speakers. Also, music only really comes in 2 channel stereo. DVDs and BluRay are encoded into 5.1 but music is still 2 channel so you will have to set your receiver to a setting that splits the encoded signal to play on all speakers (many have Dolby or DTS settings that will do this)
