I have a question regarding copying information from a desktop (or laptop) to a potable hard drive. Does the portable hard drive store some type of identifier from the desktop computer to be able to track where the data came from?

No it doesn't. Usually you only back up data suck as pics, music, docs, etc. and you just copy/paste it from the user folders.

I thought that if you used windows backup, that it could tell the difference between several different computers?

I think it only identifies the Operating system, not the specific hardware. I could be wrong, but Ive never had any issues with it.

I suppose it depends on what backup software he's using; if any at all.

I was talking about the built in windows backup. it has been a while, but i know I used it one time, but never needed the backed up info... so I am unsure of the ID method.

Ive used it across different machines, all it requires is that you use windows backup to restore the information.
