Hello,

I do not use firefox, but I have heard SO much about it. I am pretty close to downloading it to see what all the hype is about. Can anyone give me some info on it? Someone on my site has questions about it too and I don't have any answers to give them. Any help?

Thanks

Basically the main selling features that it has that set it apart from IE, is tabbed browsing so you can have one window open but have 10 tabs of different sites you can cycle through. Seems to use less memory usage, erm it looks alot better and you can download new skins, there is lots of handy plugins, and you can configure it, either yourself or using a programme to be specific to youy internet connection to optimise performance. Really its IE and more. Ohh and the windows you browse in is slightly bigger as thats bars are smaller and compact.

Only real problem is you need to use IE to do windows updates, but then again you can't use any other browser to do that except IE.

Well I think thats basically all right. Try going to www.mozilla.com/firefox for more infomation.

Basically with the advent of IE7 Firefox is relegated to fanboyism and rebellion against the machine. It's main selling feature was that it lacked ActiveX, thus supposedly making it more secure, as that was IE6's weakest link.

It had it's pros and cons. It did make it more secure in some aspects, but it came at a price. A lot of multimedia and interactive content on the internet utilizes ActiveX. You don't have that, you miss out. Plus, IE7 cracked down on the rogue use of ActiveX by prick websites that automatically installed spyware and other shit on your computer without your permission, so now websites have developed a way to get around that. Unfortunately for the fanboys they are now equally affected.

Firefox doesn't even have the advantage of tabbed browsing anymore. IE7 incorporated that as well. The only advantage Firefox has left is plugins, but whoopdidoo. I surf just fine, and I don't have any.

Firefox doesn't even have a speed advantage. Both Opera and IE7 render faster than Firefox. Firefox also has performance issues on certain rigs (for what reason I'm not exactly sure).

Although there is a worldwide web standard which Firefox adheres to, like it or not with the massive lion's share of the market that IE has, IE IS the standard. With this in mind, many websites code for IE. As a webmaster I can tell you that it is a total pain in the ass trying to code for Firefox after you have the page looking great in IE. I have lost my temper with it more than once. It can be done, and I have certainly done it, but it's a serious pain.

Soooo... If you're looking for the best web browsing experience with the most suitable compromise, the latest version of the IE7 browser is definitely the best choice to make. Coupled with Microsoft Defender, Ewido and Avast! it's practically bulletproof. You have to run those programs whether you have Opera, Firefox or IE, so you might as well run IE.

Now, if you're just simply using it to surf for "pics" (no, I'm not suggesting anything), then Opera might be a viable option. It also has tabs and no ActiveX.

Well, since you said you aren't using Firefox, I assume you have IE. Any problems with it yet? I am guessing no, if you aren't.. "if not broken, why fix it"

As everything that was said by the above posts, there are many disadvantages that Firefox has. Such as the rendering engine, where on some sites, you just cannot view it properly in Firefox as opposed to IE because IE, like said is still the standard. With the new IE7 coming out, if I was you, I'd go ahead and get the Beta and test it out. I am currently using it right now and other than skinning, I'd prefer it over others.

Exactly!

I don't have a problem with IE. Never have. Just wondered what all the excitement was about on Firefox.

I use firefox on linux, windows, and os x for features it has exclusivly.

For one, since its open source, lots of developers can create extensions for firefox.

Ad Block, All in one Gestures, web developer, faster fox, run tab as IE, and no script are a few that I run

its free and open source, and its updated by a pretty good community.

I have IE 7 RC1 on my PC as well because of HP's self maintainer service website runs a retarded active x application that only runs in IE. I am not totally impressed and I can't surf the net w/o mouse gestures anymore, I am too used to it. Opera does offer gestures, and I think its a good browser now that its free again, but I think FF is one of the better browsers out there.
