Question about free guest Wifi

In August, I had to start kidney dialysis. The clinic offers free Wifi. I was given what was supposed to be the login info, but had frequent problems getting/staying connected. My phone would say "Connected, no internet" while others had no problem. A little over a week ago, I noticed a sign in the waiting area of the clinic, about the Wifi, that had a different username than I was told. I started using what the sign said, and have had no further issues. My question is, If the username I was told was wrong, how was I ever getting online with it?

Too many variables, could be something like user permissions/NAC via an identity management platform such as ISE, or something else entirely. Without knowing anything about the setup they're all just random guesses.
