Question about IP.

My girlfriend and I, as well as a few friends have all noticed that my computer will randomly change IP's at the most random of times.

I'm curious, but would anyone know the reason?

Your IP lease is expiring and for whatever reason it isn't being renewed so it asks for a new one. I know you say it's random but does it also coincide with when you are not active on the internet?

Wow. So I had to re read that a few times.

It happens on the internet and off.
It tends to change when the computer is shut down and restarted, too.

It almost acts like it's a dial up modem.

Happening when you restart your computer makes sense, your computer asks for an IP when it starts up and connects. Are you on Bell/other DSL provider? They usually cycle IPs when you disconnect and reconnect to the internet.

DSL is not a " always on connection " like cable so you may get a new ip lease
when you make a new connection after your IP lease has expired, I am unsure why this would happen while your on the internet but i guess it could but you would notice a lag in your webbrowsing when the connection is droped while the lease is being renewed

Its called a Dynamic IP.

Basically, Your given a "lease" (Which Cromewell Spoke about) And it sounds as tho your ISP is only allowing you too have a Lease for a period of time.

I too am curious why you would be getting New IP's Why your actually Using the internet.

You might experience a bit of a lagg while the Renewing Process is happening.

Changing IP's is not a bad thing so don't worry yourself.

With Local Area Networking, I have my server setup so it will give out a new IP every 7 Days too all my PC's

If i wanted a IP Earlier, I could use Command Prompt Using:

IpConfig
ipRelease
ipRenew

And that would renew my IP.

Kind of Pointless, But good too know.

K3rupt said it all, and somtimes you lose connection without seeing it ( for a tiny moment) and this might be why you change IPs when you're online.
