Question about laptop and the internet

Hello everyone!

First I should say that I'm very nearly computer illiterate so that might be the only problem. The situation is this: I bought a used Dell Latitude D600 on Ebay. This is the first time I've used a laptop. It has Windows XP Professional, and I'm using Netzero Hispeed dial-up. The laptop is doing something that seems like a malfunction, but I thought I would ask you all about it before returning it for an exchange or refund.

When I'm on the internet, the pages don't fill the entire screen. Instead, they have a large margin on both sides and the page seems kind of compressed. The bar on top of the page stretches all the way across. On at least one website just the right side has a margin, but it's equal to both margins put together. The margins have the same color as the page's background. All this is true for the Yahoo home page, but Yahoo email pages look fine. On this Computer Forum website the page looks fine.

I've tried making changes using the Control Panel, but either I'm not doing the right thing or that's not the problem.

Also, often when I move the cursor it inexplicably highlights everything and I have to click it several times to clear it. And the cursor will sometimes turn into a circle with a slash and then it won't work for a few seconds until it goes back to the regular cursor.

Is any or all of this normal? Is there a simple fix, or should I return it to the seller? If I return it, how do I describe the problem so I don't sound like a novice who just doesn't know how to use a laptop?

Even though it's used, it represents a substantial investment to me and I really do need it.

Thank you for your help!!!

My guess is you simply have a wide-screen display and you're viewing sites that are not formatted for such a screen(are most aren't) Try droping your resolution to something like 1024x768. Though this will fix it, you'll probably get black bars on either side.

yeah, reducing your resolution might solved the websites problem... i do get that once in a while, its not a big deal...

as for the cursor problem, it is normal especially when u are using the pad given (not sure what the name of it but its the one u use to move the cursor :P ), again here it is normal to experience that especially since this i ur first time using a laptop...

a quick fix to this is use a mouse when using ur laptop... :D

hope this helps...

edit: you dont have to return the laptop...

Whew! What a relief! Thank you both for the reassurance! I had agonized over the decision to buy the laptop, and I was afraid that I had made a big mistake.

Changing the resolution did indeed solve the screen issue. No longer does it look like it has a ten inch screen instead of the fifteen inch one it actually has.

That touch pad thing does take some getting used to. The cursor button in the middle of the keyboard doesn't cause the problem as much.

Thanks again for your help! It is much appreciated!
