Question about network cards

I just purchased a HP Pavillion a6826f for my kids to use. I came with a network card which expects an ethernet cable to be plugged in. I need a wireless network card. I was looking at purchasing a refirb Linksys WMP300N card. There is something in the specs that has me wondering. The specifications of the card that say that I need a "Available PCI Slot for Wireless-N PCI Adapter". Is this any different that a normal PCI slot? My specifications on the computer say that I have:

PCI Slots (Total): 1
PCI Slots (Available): 1
PCI Express X1 Slots (Total): 2
PCI Express X1 Slots (Available): 1
PCI Express X16 Slots (Total): 1
PCI Express X16 Slots (Available): 1

BTW, what is the difference between a regular PCI slot, an Express X1 and Express X16 slots?

The difference is the size of the slots are different and the bus speed of the slots. The slots aren't interchangeable either. Your specs say you have 1 pci slot available then you should be good to go by getting a wireless N pci card.

One thing I can tell you is that dont fall for the bullshit Wireless N Stuff, I just recently upgraded from a Linksys WRT54g To a D-Link DGL-4500. One thing is that the speed is the same. And I also purchased D-Link Wireless N Pci-E Network Cards. And Second of all my Hp wireless printer Only Accepts Wep, And My Iphone Only Accepts Wep. But in order for the Wireless N to run at good speeds D-Link tells you to set the security to WPA2. And This is the reasons why I think you Should stick with Wireless G.

Wireless G is more than enough for pretty much anyone. 54Mbs is plenty, and much faster than many high speed connections. The only place this comes into play is in network sharing applications, where high speed file sharing is ongoing, and even then, if 54mbps is too slow, then you won't have a problem shelling out the extra cash for the N adapter.

interesting, well when i upgraded to wireless N, the reason i did it was because 54mbs was just not fast enough for gaming online, so i upgraded, and it worked a hell of a lot better no laggs anymore. But i do have to say, the internet speed is the same as G,even though it is running a 100mbs faster...kinda disappointing, but aslong as it games fine, i have no complaints...
