I have a hard drive with three partitions on it. The first one is just empty space, the second one is a backup of my computer, and the third one is a backup of my sisters computer. my question is, would i be able to use my recovery discs on the first partition and still have the other two without losing anything on them?

Well, that all depends on what you mean by "recovery disk" and by "back-up of my computer".

If you're talking about the recovery disc that came w/ the computer, probably not. Those usually have all the software, etc, saved on another partition of the drive.

So - what's your setup - is this disk w/ three partitions you're talking about an extra HD in the computer? What do you mean by "back-up"?

If you used cloning software like Clonezilla to create an image of your HD and stored the image on an extra/external HD, then you should be able to use the same software to restore the image to whatever partition of the disk you like, so long as it is equal size to or larger than the original.

Does that help out at all?

This is an extra hard drive. My main hard drive crashed. When I got my computer i made recovery discs, (By the way im useing windows vista). Before my hard drive crashed I backed it up with the back-up software installed on the computer. What I want to do is to use the recovery disc on the first partition, while keeping the other two partitions, so i can restore the backup onto the first partition.

Yes. Why won't it let you pick a partition? What are you using? Windows Vista Complete PC Restore?

Can you describe the steps you're taking? Are you sure that you have backed up to separate partitions rather than folders?

Screen shots would be helpful...

There's a tutorial here:

Im using what ever came on windows vista. It gives me two options when i put the disc in, check for problems or format and recover to factory settings. It does say the windows part of the hard drive, whatever that means.

Are you referring to the disc that came with the PC or the disc that you created using the recovery utility?

I'll get back with you on this around 8pm CST - hopefully someone else can help you out until then... sorry - appointments ya know :P

The disc I created.

Well, using the disc you created, you should get to a menu like the one in this thread:

...wait a minute - is it an HP?

look at this thread: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...703&docname=c00608578#c00608578_ReformatDisks

it says
WARNING: If the disk tests indicate that the operating system is not installed or the drive is corrupted, the only option presented is 'R' perform a full system recovery . This option will reformat the drive and destroy all the user data. See Before reformatting the hard drive for more information.

Let me ask you this - have you removed the bad drive from the computer - because if you're not getting
#
Press 'R' for standard System Recovery options .
then it's obviously not seeing your recovery partitions.

If you haven't, pull the bad drive out of the computer, and then boot w/ your recovery CD and see if you get the 'R' option this time. Let me know. :D
