Why is Intel naming their new processor the i5? It makes no sense to me why Intel would release a processor called i7 then release a better and faster processor called the i5.

I don't think they're releasing i5 as a " better - faster processor "

IMHO - There's not enough reliable information that I've seen to evaluate the core i5 yet. It's currently not set to be released til September '09- a two month delay from July projection.

i5 will not be better and faster, it will be a mainstream part on a new chipset/socket, with only a dual channel vs tri channel ddr3 memory controller, and the pci-express controller and integrated graphics will be built into the i5.

i5 is very close to i7 in performance, and in single-threaded applications it is even better than i7 due to the the superior turbo mode that i5 have

Thanks for the useful information on the i5. From what I have read, the i5 will likely also be more power efficient than the i7 (95 Watt or lower).
