I am currently running it on an older system along with win2000. It's a p4 2ghz with 512mb ram and an ATI card. I really like it, however it seems to lag alot for some reason and has graphics problems. I am building a new system(650i, e6550, 8500gt, 2gigs ram) and I plan on installing ubuntu on it first and then further down the road pick up vista when I have the cash. will fiesty fawn work better on my newer system as far as compatibility issues? also, will I have trouble installing vista onto a seperate drive after ubuntu is already installed, or do I need to re-format and install vista first?

Ubuntu Linux does an amazing job at detecting hardware and it should work fine on the new system that you'll be building. It may have to find some Restricted Drivers for your Graphics Card. You should do some research to see if some are available for the 8500gt.

If you're planning on installing Vista on a separate hard drive later, all 'should' be fine. I've never done anything other than a dual boot, but I'm assuming it's most likely the same type of process. You'll just have to configure the GRUB Boot Loader for Vista.

I'm not sure if you've heard or not, but Gutsy Gibbon just barely came out and now has support for NTFS. This should be a big plus for you when/if you install Vista.

Hope that helped!

Feisty is absolutely gorgeous and very well laid out. It should be completely compatible with the system you are building.

With 7.04 and now 7.10, you can one-click a package to bypass manual searching and a script will determine what you have and what driver it needs, and then install it for you.

As far as adding Vista later, the XP MBR doesn't play well with other OS's, and I've heard Vista's just flat-out hates other OS's (though I've never confirmed with Vista since I refuse to use it). When I build systems that are going to be dual-boot, I always put on windows first, then the other OS, just to make sure GRUB takes charge of everything. Bear in mind though, that that's for a new system, not one already in-use. I suppose you could manually edit your GRUB, which I don't recommend unless you really know what you're doing when it comes to GRUB, or just pop in an Ubuntu Alternate CD and reinstall GRUB only.
