Question about upgraing my motherboard and processor

Hey guys,

I am hoping to upgrade my motherboard and processor soon and i need to check weather or not it would "work". I have never done this before but i have change loads of parts and stuff so i have a general idea.

My current motherboard is a MSI MS-6741 running an AMD 64 Athlon 2.0Ghz processor
I am hoping to upgrade it to an ECS AM3 GeForce 6100PM-M2 motherboard with an AMD Athlon™2 X4 Quad Core 620 2600MHz AM3 CPU

I would also want to plug my current hard drive into the new motherboard and run everything that i did have. I also have a EMU 0404 PCI soundcard and an Nvidia GeForce FX5200 which i would also like to transfer over.

Is this a good idea, do you think this would work?

You'll also need to buy new DDR2 RAM.

You may be able to use your current hard drive, but don't expect to just plug it in and keep your programs and such.

It will require you to reinstall Windows.

Back up all your personal data before you reinstall.
 
You guy's sure about reinstalling Windows??? I recently replaced my Dad's motherboard and plugged all the same devices into it. XP was still intact with no data loss whatsoever. Just had to reactivate Windows.

I'd still back up my data but I think Windows will be fine.
 
Upgrading the motherboard will result in a vast number of different drivers and controllers. Your current install of windows was installed on your current drivers and controllers and when you upgrade the motherboard, they just won't mesh. In some cases, you may be able to do a repair install that will not wipe your files, but the two times I attempted that, it failed and would not boot into Windows afterwards.
To be safe, just plan on re-installing windows.
In your dad's case, it was probably the same motherboard or a very similar model with the same drivers.
