Question on 8800GT

I see Dell offers this card with some of their computers. However the psu is only 300w. I thought that wasn't possible?

Which computer are you looking at? The 8800GT won't run on a 300 watt power supply, I havent even seen many desktops nowadays that use a PSU as low as 300 watts.

Looking at some specs for their computers that offer the 8800GT, the lowest I could find was a 375w, which is still ridiculous. It was on the XPS 420... what do you think they were smoking?

Any low-end/home PC's from eMachines, Compaq, HP or any of those will have a 300W, 350W or even 250W PSU's.

wow 375W on a 8800GT

i wouldnt go any lower than 600W :D

I think 450W can make it just as long as it has good 12+v amperage

my best mate is running an 8800gts on a 450 watt rosewill PSU

my sisters dell had a 250watt PSU on a P4 machine...it died, i replaced it with a 400watt, and the thing actually sped up a bit O.O

I too am interested in the same question. Of course it may not run optimally, but would the drawbacks get worse than over heating or sub optimal performance.

same situation with my rig, amd 3400 and X800GTO were running with a no-name 250W psu, it blew one day and i replaced it with an OCZ GameXstream 700W... i thought something was wrong when i turned it on and the screen didnt flash!

Computers and components need much less power than what's become the general consensus with certain groups of people.

Dell knows this, and they know that people who buy their products usually do not belong to these certain groups, and therefore don't even think about the power supply.

So, knowing that they aren't marketing to power supply consumerish types, they only supply what's needed.

Koopatroop I did some research and it seems that it works just fine. The psu they have in Dell computers are underrated. They are actually 400w+ they also are 26amp. The Duo core and the 8800GT also use less power. Most normal systems under full load with the Duo and 8800GT are around 300 watts. If you were using a single core or an AMD processor and say a 8800gtx card then you probably would not be able to do it. Like I said this is what I researched I have not done this.
