Question on converting

I thought I would post here because there's more traffic here. I'm tryin to convert either mp4 file or a dvd to avi. how do people like on file sharing programs get those high quality video files at around 700mb, I've tried a few different programs and they come out like crap when i convert them to avi. How do they do it? Please, any suggestions?

1. What do you mean MP4 file? (i.e., an MPEG4 file or a file with the MP4 extension, if the latter than we'll need a GSpot/AVICodec dump)
2. Encode with TMPGEnc for DVD (you can do so for avi too but VirtualDub is much more efficient)

Thanks, I used nero recode, and the output was mp4 ext. i did use super dvd ripper a while ago and it worked great. now for some reason it keeps crashing. well thanks for responding.
