Question on Norton Antivirus

Hi, I see many people saying that Norton Antivirus is bad but never gave a specific reason besides "It's a resource hog".

Do people who say that don't use it because of the resources it takes up? I've never seen anyone put something bad about it's effectiveness and detection rate..

So is Norton Antivirus actually very effective with high detection rate but people who say it's a resource hog don't use it because it's a resource hog?

Well im currently using the trial of NIS, and tbh, its using less resources then when i had seperate programs running. And its firewall and anti-virus, so far, have served me very well. When it runs out, and if it stays as it is, im gonna highly consider purchasing it.

I stopped using Norton's because I didn't want to pay for it. Also, I did notice problems with the resources it was using, particularly the email scanner, and there were issues with program interactions.

I switched to Avast! and things ran smoother, no prblems with any of my programs, the AV updates much more frequently, IMO, than Norton's did and it does a bang-up job of detecting malware.

Norton is top notch when it comes to detection rate. Resource hog? Is 8mb of ram a hog? Unless I am doing a system scan I dont see it using alot of resources on my computer. I am running norton antivirus2005 but I have tried norton system works and that did use alot of resources and I had alot of issues with it. IMO I would recommend their antivirus but none of there other products!

my northan antivirus only uses up bout 7mb of ram. It only gets annoying when it starts to scan random programs and files when im installing things..that can bring hugeee lags, but i usually just cancel the scan. IMO Nortan is very good and its worth the price.

that probably depends on the users pc specifications and what he enables on norton and what he allows it to do at startup and what not running background and scans and what not.

however, i had to stop using it because of the subscription renewals. it pretty much at times can seem like it scans everything you do which some people complain as "resource hog". sometimes it blocks scripts, it doesn't work. its a pain to uninstall. and many more, i stopped using it after 2003 cuz of reasons. if you want to do a search, you can find out that its probably not number one. yes its been one of the longest running antivirus programs, but it will probably be like a top 5.

in short, my main reason is probably because the subscription.

Ditto...but its a nice feture in you are trying to install something you are not 100% sure about, mine caught a virus in a feeware app from an unknown site.

It's not bad program but it cost to much and you need to talk to tech support they charge you $29. I go with PC-cillin.

Norton works well, but there are other antivirus programs out there which work just as well - and are free! AVG is one of them.

I use nortan and think its great. The last time I payed for it was in 96 I think it was. They always have it for something like this.
60-30instant rebate-30upgrade rebate(bring POP from the last version you had) and then all you pay is few bucks in gas and tax.

Thats what I use to think!

What don't you like about AVG? The last review I've seen comparing it to Norton was quite favourable. It reported a 100% 'in the wild' detection rating. Indeed, it detected some viruses that i've missed using Norton. That's not to say I don't like Norton, but I think it's drastically overpriced.

i have norton antivirus 2006 and its great, virus definition updates every day of course, fast scans (scans around 70 000 files on my comp), the only thing that annoys me is when i open an excel or word file with MS office professional 2003 it starts to scan that document, HOW TO TURN THAT OFF?!?

Are you sure thats from nortan? doesn't happen on mine...

Go into options > auto protect > which file types to scan for viruses, then exclude files like doc. or what ever file type it is in ms office. How ever I dont know if you would want to turn that off though because I think you can get a virus from those types of files in emails!
