Question on virus / spy ware

Question on virus / spy ware.
Most software of that type is dated for use with free updates for one year. At that point you must renew to get updates. My question is does the software stop protecting completely at that time or will it still work with just what it's got just no more updates.?

Yes, the software will operate but with old definitions, decreasing effectiveness. I really don't think you have to worry about that though, most software of that type automatically renew themselves, quietly and with little fanfare.
