currently my plan is to buy a crappy laptop for taking notes during class and building a powerhouse desktop to sit in my dorm room for gaming and such...

is this a good idea?
or should i just buy a powerhouse laptop right away?

if the powerhouse laptop is the way to go... any suggestions?

well if you get a powerhouse laptop its not going to be as portable. its going to be a b**** to carry from class to class and the fact you'd have to plug it in as the high end compenents take alot of electricity. just go with a very light and cheap laptop and build a powerhouse desktop.

The thing that most people don't consider when getting a new laptop is that they are very resistant to upgrading. So, if you are only going to be using the laptop for notetaking and basic functions like that, I would get the basic laptop. Then use the money that would have been used otherwise to build a pretty darn good desktop gaming machine...

I'm in college, I have a pretty good desktop if I do say so myself and I spend 90%+ of my time on it. I've also got a lappy, but basically the only times I use it are when I need to go down the hall to help someone or feel like sitting in bed, I've brought it to class to take notes twice in six months. If you want it to be portable enough to carry around to classes, do yourself a favor and get a 14" screen, not a 15 or 15.4

Yeah, my wife has a 15.4 for law school and she complains that it's too big to carry around everywhere. I would just buy a pen and a pad for taking notes and use the extra money for beer or on your desktop.

have you considered a PDA instad of laptop, if its just for taking notes then they are cheaper, allow you to write directly into them, so could be faster than typing, and are the ultimate of portability And if you don't like the idea of writing on the screen then you could get a keyboard for it, that would then leave you with more money for the powerhouse desktop

Lee :D
