I've reformated my hard drive and I would like to load xp pro on it. However, I lost the fresh install cd ,but I have a friend that has a Dell (mine isn't a Dell) cd that has xp pro on it. Would that work if I put that cd in and install?

Yes it is illegal, if it were something like windows 2003 server then it wouldnt be so bad because you could simply buy a new client access license for it and that would cover you in any court of law. But win xp im afraid has to be bought and paid for to use legally.

No, it wouldn't be illegal, as long as you use your own serial number. But I doubt that a Dell CD actually has a full version of XP.

it will depend on ur hard disk, some has serial number which are especially made to run for certian CDs, but anyway, it will not legal to install, but u could made it,

If you still know your cd key, you can use somebody elses xp cd, as long as your using your credidentials to activate it.

The Dell version is a complete and regular version of XP. HP is the only company that won't allow you to install on anything but an HP. As stated before, use YOUR cd key. If you use your firends, the micro giant will assume it's a stolen copy and you won't be able to use automatic updates or activate the product.
